Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome

What is it?

Interstitial cystitis (also known as bladder pain syndrome) is a distressing chronic disorder of the bladder.

Symptoms:

šŸ¤ a frequent need to urinate

šŸ¤ feeling compelled to urinate due to fear of pain

šŸ¤ pain, pressure or discomfort which worsens with bladder filling

šŸ¤ pain relieved by passing urine

šŸ¤ may worsen with certain food or drinks

There are thought to be 2 causes:

šŸ¤ Pain from Hunnerā€™s lesions (a deep inflammatory lesion in the bladder mucosa) diagnosed with cystoscope which create overactivity and also pain in the pelvic floor.

šŸ¤ A triggering event, such as birth trauma or surgery, which causes dysfunction of the pelvic floor. The high tone and trigger points can then create bladder pain syndrome symptoms.

Treatment:

šŸ¤ speak to your GP or gynaecologist to provide further testing and management

šŸ¤ see a pelvic floor physio who may use techniques such as pelvic floor release and, stretching and down training exercises.
