FAQ

It is normal to have questions, so we have put together some of the most frequently asked ones here. If your question isn't listed feel free to contact our friendly team who will be happy to assist you.

What will happen in my first appointment?

At your first appointment you will be asked to fill out a client registration form and your physiotherapist will greet you and take you to a private treatment room. They will then explain what will happen and answer any immediate questions you have before starting the assessment process. First, they want to hear your story, when your problems started, what has happened since and how it is affecting your life. Next, they will ask about your medical history, bladder, bowel and sexual function to ensure you have a thorough screening. At the end of the questions the physio will discuss physical assessment options and why they would be beneficial to your assessment. Once a physical exam has been carried out your physio will go through a management plan for you to help you reach your goals.

Do I need to have an internal exam?

The short answer is no. However, an internal exam is a huge part of the assessment and treatment process in the majority of cases. Our team are very experienced and ensure you feel comfortable and in control the whole time. The assessment can be stopped at any point you wish and we are more than happy to put things in place to help you feel comfortable. Some women need to slowly adjust to the clinic setting so an internal exam may not happen until a few sessions in. We aim for open discussion so let us know if you are nervous of have any questions prior to your examination.

Can I still come to my appointment if I am on my period?

Yes. All aspects of your assessment and treatment can be carried out as long as you feel comfortable. If you would rather not have the internal component whilst on your period, there are usually external things that can be worked on instead. Blueys (a protective sheet) are always placed on the bed for a vaginal exam and gentle wipes and spare pads are available for use if needed.

Do I need a referral?

No. You do not need a referral to attend Dahlia Pelvic Physio unless you have an Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC) in which case we will need the paperwork given to you by your GP. If you do have a referral letter, scan results or post-op report feel free to bring them along to your appointment.

Can I attend if I don't have pelvic pain?

We have extensive experience is all areas of pelvic health, but it is best to call our friendly team to discuss your unique needs. We do not treat general sports or musculoskeletal injuries; however, we can always give you some other recommendations.

Can I claim on my health fund?

If you are part of a health fund and your policy includes physiotherapy, you can generally claim back part of the cost of your appointment. The level of cover you have will depend on how much the gap will be. If you are unsure, it is best checking directly with your health insurer, especially with any small physio led classes.

What if I need to cancel?

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we need at least 24 hours notice. This will allow us to offer the appointment to someone from our waitlist. Failing to attend or notifying us within the 24 hours will incur a cancellation fee of 50% of the appointment cost. This is not claimable on your health fund and the cancellation fee cannot be bulk billed for those patients claiming through Medicare. If you need to cancel out of business hours, you are able to leave a voicemail which operates 24 hours a day. We do not like having to charge a cancellation fee however it allows us to keep providing a high level of care to all our clients.
